NTUBC sent 3 crews to race at the two-day event. Starting with our women's double fighting it out in the U23 Double Sculls for the University Shield on the Saturday.
The crew had only been together 2 weeks prior to the event and were looking forward to finding out where they stood in the field. After a clean time trial the women looked to build upon their performance in the G Final. After a determined start, the crew kept up with the front of the pack but failed to find the pace they needed in the middle of the race and started to fall back. The last 500m saw real determination from the crew as they started to pull back on the rest of the field and just missed out on beating York University to a 4th place finish in their category.
The Sunday saw similar racing conditions to the Saturday with spurts of sunshine and a large tailwind. It was the time for our Heavyweight and Lightweight men's quads to take to the water.
Both quads got off to a good start in their time trials both making the C/D semis with the heavyweights finishing ahead of the lightweights by 5 seconds in a time of 6.10.6. Good performances were shown by both crews in the Semifinals with the heavyweight crew just missing out on a top 3 finish which meant both crews qualified for the D Final.
In the Final, the heavyweight crew had a strong start and kept ahead of a crew from Maidenhead in a close fight for 3rd place. In the last 750m the heavyweight crew took their rate up to solidify their lead and a costly mistake by Royal Chester allowed the NTU crew to come across the line in 2nd place.
The lightweight crew set out to beat their rivals from Durham University who took the early lead up to the 1000m marker but in an explosive last 500m the NTU crew rowed through Durham and capitalised on the mistake from Royal Chester to finish 4th, less than a second behind the crew from Maidenhead in a close Final.
