Starting off the day’s racing was the captain of all doubles with Emma Wrigley and Faye Williams, current and future women's captains having had a strong week of training heading into the weekend. Winning a close heat they looked confidently towards their final, narrowly missing out on third place to Leicester, Agecroft and Nottingham RC beating Hollingworth Lake and Twickenham RC.
Women’s Intermediate Double
Up next to face what began to turn into a day of strong headwinds, was our women’s novice quad, consisting of Anja Meredith, Meg Bufton, Brooke Mottershead and Meg Alderton. Conditions on the lake becoming considerably worse, choppy with winds harsher than before, the girls performed valiantly, with the grit and determination that NTUBC prides itself on finishing the race, although a little wet.

Starting off the men's intermediate race, with what was certain to be a promising result was Nick Brandish, Joe Elliot, Seb Ellis, and Sam Geller at bow. Attention was called and silence swept the banks, tension taking hold in its place, suddenly they were off and to a great start. Coming up on the 750m mark it was all to fight for between the top three crews, nearing the final 500m however a solid push from the boys secured them first place with a lengthy lead of over 10 seconds beating Exeter, Bedford Sch, Derby RC, Cantabrigian and Warrington.
The final race of the day for NTUBC started with an easy win in their heat for Olly Picking and James Beagles, winning by an astounding 24 seconds at 08:30, followed by Peterborough City at 08:54. With the final set firmly in their sights confidently, and with the grace only that of someone with large quads could manage, they paddled downstream for what was about to be a thrilling end to the day. The race was a close call, with the double being behind for the majority of the race with 750m to go. A visibly strenuous push took them a length and a half in front of the leaders Sheffield, to then have to dig even deeper as Sons of the Thames made a frantic move to gain victory, chasing our boys over the finish line. The double won by 2 seconds, ending the day with a time of 07:50 exhausted but smiling, with pots deservedly in their hands.

Fresh off the tail of a gripping weekend at BUCS NTUBC were back, and with what could only be described as a gleam the shape of pots in their eyes.
