SATURDAY

Women’s Novice Double's SF

The sun was sparkling over the crisp flat lake as the first of our women’s novice doubles bobbed their boat down at the launch pontoons. The girls performed valiantly, furiously battling out the first 750m for second place, overtaking Leeds Uni in the last 250 and gaining some ground on City of Cambridge before crossing the finish line.

On yet another stunning day racing started crack of dawn. For NTUBC the first to break the ice, and venture out onto the water was one of the clubs longest running power couples Megan Halsted and Yiana Shakespeare. Looking quietly confident they boated down to the starting line where a sharp call to attention set them off at a lightning pace down the course. After a hard fought 500m they dug deep to push for second place eventually sliding across the line ahead of Neots RC and Doncaster but unfortunately did not qualify for the finals.

Back again for their semi finals our speedy women’s double were excited to prove they deserved to be there and have their shot at a Peterborough pot. The entire race was hard fought by all participants making for a thrilling watch as inches of a length were being made on each other by all the crews. The girls crossed the finish line placing a respectable third beating Peterborough city.

Too end the first day of racing it was the turn of the women’s novice 8 to take to the water for their first heat. At exactly 14.32 attention was called and like a hare the girls powered off the line and by the 500m mark they had gained a considerable lead of over two lengths, crossing the finish line even further ahead of their competitors placing first, beating York and City of Cambridge. With eager anticipation they waited in preparation for their final which was to be their most challenging race of the day. The girls flew off the line and gave the full 1000m all they had left, considering half the team had been racing all day, wasn’t a full tank but placed a respectable 4th to end the day happy with their efforts and achievements.

IM3.4xNext up a little later that morning was the novice quad who due to a last minute change had to be entered into the intermediate quad race. Despite this and being made up of three men and a woman they performed to the best of their ability placing 4th after a tough race against seasoned rowers.

The second of our women’s novice doubles spurred on by their teammates success wiped the sleep dust from their eyes and prepared for their start as the sun emerged from its backdrop. Making a strong start the girls fought for every last meter eventually placing a respectable third ahead of Leeds RC

Later on that day for the last event of the regatta for NTUBC the one and only Olly Picking stepped up to the task of bringing home something a bit more tangible for the club. Boating down to his lane he looked prepared, upright and determined. Gliding to place in his lane his dark blue boat hardly distinguishable from the water. Suddenly he was off and away without any effort, gaining length after length, by each and every mark acquiring a commanding lead, taking a well deserved first place bringing home a pot and beating Ipswich, Gravesend and York.
